Originally serving as the James Mitchell School until 2005, this 46,195 SF historic building was restored and renovated into the ScholarMade Charter School. The project involved extensive exterior historic restoration work and interior lobby preservation. New entrance lobbies and canopies were added, along with a new circulation and connection corridor addition. Existing windows were removed and replaced with new replica windows, maintaining the building’s historic character.
The renovation included a new roof, upgraded mechanical and electrical systems, and the installation of a new elevator. The building now features classrooms, a lecture hall, library commons, fine arts spaces, counseling offices, collaboration areas, academic support spaces, a kitchen and cafeteria, and an outdoor playground. Additionally, the project encompassed complete site redevelopment to enhance accessibility and functionality.
*The James Mitchell School is listed on the National Historic Register.
