Clark Contractors partnered with the Central Arkansas Library System (CALS) on the renovation of the Sue Cowan Williams Library, transforming the space to better serve the community while honoring the legacy of its namesake. Located adjacent to Dunbar Middle School, the library now features a welcoming west-facing entrance that directly connects to the school, reflecting Sue Cowan’s long-standing dedication to education. A new plaza with landscaping, benches, and picnic tables creates an inviting outdoor gathering space, while a striped crosswalk through the parking lot provides a safe pathway for students walking from campus to the library.

Inside, the reimagined layout introduces a dedicated Teen Center with age-appropriate books, computer stations, and flat-screen TVs with gaming consoles. The space is enclosed for a sense of privacy while maintaining visibility for safety and supervision.

To address staff needs, a mezzanine was constructed above the existing office area, effectively doubling the space for additional workstations and storage. The project also includes a new teaching kitchen, added as an extension of the existing community room. The kitchen supports cooking classes, community events, and a new partnership with nearby Dunbar Garden to promote food education and local engagement.

The renovated Sue Cowan Williams Library blends modern functionality with thoughtful design, creating a flexible and inclusive space that continues to serve as a cornerstone for learning, connection, and community.
