We were given the responsibility of renovating the Barton Research Building, which stands as one of the oldest structures on the UAMS campus, having been built in 1960. Our project involved replacing the building’s exterior and infrastructure. We made significant improvements to the exterior, enhancing its functionality and appearance. Moreover, we completely gutted and stripped the first through sixth floors to create an open office floor plan, which could serve as future swing space. The lab building saw major changes as well, with the center corridor and segmented lab rooms made of CMU block being transformed.
The single-pane windows in the building were outdated and inefficient, so they were replaced with double-pane, energy-efficient storefront windows spanning 16,128 SF. Only the original brick was kept and re-caulked and resealed. The old lattice brock that provided ventilation was removed and replaced with continuous architectural louvers. The rood was also replaced. The elevator shafts and car shells remained, however they underwent a complete modernization and were converted to machine room-less traction.
